The Bar Association for Commerce, Finance and Industry was founded in 1965 to promote the interests and professional status of Barristers employed in commerce, finance and industry, In 1975 it inaugurated an annual lecture by an eminent lawyer. The topic is of general interest to the legal profession and indeed the wider business community. From 1981 the annual lecture became known as The Denning Lecture.
The first Denning Lecture was given by the Rt. Hon. The Lord Templeman, entitled "The State of the Legal Profession". In his opening remarks, Lord Templeman said:
|
"These lectures which were instituted by the Bar Association for Commerce, Finance and Industry have produced interesting and provocative contributions. Now and henceforth the lectures are to be known as "The Denning Lectures" in honour of our most interesting and provocative Master of the Rolls. He has always been concerned about the state of the Profession and is a supporter of the Association whose members help to ensure that the training, discipline and ethics of the Bar are fully maintained outside the narrow confines of advocacy and litigation". |
The series of Denning Lectures has continued in an unbroken sequence every year since its inception. Lord Denning himself delivered the lecture in 1984. This year's lecture by Lord Neuberger of Abbotsbury MR was delivered on 23rd November at The Parliament Chamber, Inner Temple, London. Copies of some of the lectures are available. Please contact us if you are interested in a particular lecture.
