J of Corby
We heard on 
BBC Radio Northampton
of J's urgent need of funds to be able to continue with his gymnastics training.
J was chosen, at the age of 5, to train at an elite gymnastics club in Nottingham. He currently trains three days per week in Nottingham and once a week in Corby and has already won several titles including:
- East County under 9’s Floor and Vault Champion.
- Mid Counties under 10’s Six Piece Champion.
- Northamptonshire under 10’s Six Piece Champion.
- London open under 10’s Rings and Floor Champion.
BBC Radio Northampton told us that J needed about £2000 per year to cover fees for Nottingham and Corby Gymnastics Clubs, affiliation fees, accident insurance, travelling costs etc and that his mum, Jo, and their friends were struggling to raise funds by selling donated bric-a-brac etc in empty shops, doing car-boots sales etc.
Jo also wrote to most of the companies in Northants but, although J was featured several times in local newspapers, nobody seemed willing to help.
J’s coach, Sue, expects him to compete nationally from the age of 9 and to compete for the East Midlands team in the National Development Plan finals, finishing in the top ten. She expects him then to get into the National Squad for his age group.
She also expects J’s progress to continue at National level within the top 10, and probably the top 3, positions in each subsequent year in the NDP finals.
Sue thinks he will be ready to compete at the British U12 championships from 2006 and in the U14 British Championships from the age of 10 and, by the age of 12, she expects him to be capable of winning medals at that level.
If J continues as expected, Sue thinks he will be representing England and Great Britain at U16 and U18 with the potential to go on to the Olympics and World Championships. J apparently compares well with talented gymnasts that Nottingham has seen in the past and they think he has the potential to perform at the very highest level in gymnastics.
We agreed to support J - particularly as Jo, J and their friends have put in so much time and effort themselves to raise funds rather than sitting in wait for a benefactor.
We hope to continue this support of J over the years in accordance with the funds needed and in reflection of any other support that he receives.
