Rl of Cambridge

This application was supported by the South Cambridgeshire Child and Family Team.

RL and her husband had 4 children 3 of whom had difficulties such as autism, sensory problems, cerebral palsy, hemiopia, epilepsy and learning delay.

Before moving to their present address, they experienced a great deal of extreme thoughtlessness and discrimination.

For example, the head teacher of the local school declared that, despite the school having full wheelchair access, the pushchairs used by this family could not be brought into the school as “they would make the carpets dirty and present a fire risk”.

Consequently, the family were turned away from nativity plays etc and, if RL needed to collect her able-bodied son for any reason, she had to sign him out in the playground - not being allowed into the foyer with disabled M in his pushchair.  This story reached their local newspapers but the damage had been done.

They desperately needed a break and, as they have family in Cornwall, that area was ideal to see the family and to benefit from their help with the children.

A caravan holiday in Hayle was arranged and we were pleased to meet the cost of £620.
