Country Couples
OXFORDSHIRE
COUPLE
House Manager/Chef/ Housekeeper
Smashing job for an ‘old’ Hutchinson’s client, whose current Auzzie Couple are returning home after 5 wonderful years. An Elizabethan Manor of 7 bedrooms all en suite, 45 minutes from London set in 50 acres of formal gardens and parklands. In addition there are two cottages (one for head Gardener, one for additional guests), stable block (converted to the staff accommodation), swimming pool and tennis court. Current plans are in progress for an extension to the main house.
The household is traditional, but relatively informal in style. A smart, but casual uniform will be provided. Candidates must be completely flexible, have good stamina, and understand changing time-tables and in-house arrangements. You must show initiative and be able to anticipate the needs of the employer, and have great style in managing a house. Week-ends parties often happen at very short notice and guest numbers are very changeable. Quite often there will be day guests in addition to those in residence. The family consists of 5 children - aged 21, 18, 15, 6, and 3 years. However, only the 6 and 3 year olds live full-time with the clients, the others spend alternate weekends.
Week-ends vary from very family/children orientated, to more formal adult entertaining. Family weekends will involve multiple child friendly meals, whilst adult weekends will require dinner party cooking. The chef/cook ideally would have some formal training with an understanding of dietary requirements. The ability to bake cakes, breads & pastries would be an advantage, as would a diverse cooking repertoire. The family enjoy dishes from River Cafe, Moro, Ottolenghi and the like. On occasions, Sunday lunches and midweek dinner parties will occur at the clients’ London residence. You will be expected to cater and serve at these functions and ideally show creativity and flair for special occasions – i.e. preparing Easter egg hunts, children’s birthday parties and Christmas. Wine knowledge and cellar management is essential to the role. An understanding of managing large scale parties and events would be a bonus. The client appreciates that this can be a very busy household, so you would be required to arrange and supervise support staff.
The clients expect a high standard of housekeeping. You must have first class, hands on capability in the care of fine linens, furniture, wooden flooring, art/valuables and silver. General daily housekeeping duties, laundry and shopping are all a requirement of the role. You must be adept and confident at all aspects of table service, pouring of wine, etc. Other duties will include, but are not limited to: chauffeuring, car valeting, laying fires, flower arranging, turn down service, mixing drinks, creating ambience within rooms e.g. candles, music selection and lighting.
As this is primarily a weekend house, the couple would work 5 days per week to cover weekends, with two days off during the week in lieu. During summer months/Christmas/Easter/school holidays the family often spends extended time in the residence. This can mean longer hours and deferring days off. It is not un-usual for high profile guests to be at the house, so confidentiality is imperative. The couple must be totally discreet, with high levels of security awareness, working in co-operation with multiple monitored alarm system companies. There are several recreational vehicles so a basic knowledge of mechanics would be advantageous along with some handyman ability. The couple would be required to plan and arrange periodic specialized cleaning and maintenance by contractors e.g. windows, carpets, stonework, furnishings, painting and decoration, etc.
The couple would be provided with a modern fully furnished 2 bedroom apartment above
the stable block with separate kitchen, bathroom and sitting room. Accommodation is adjacent to, yet separate from the main house, with private entrance and small garden. A car will be
provided for both personal and professional use, mobile and landline for professional use
only. You should have a positive personality, be experienced, talented and relaxed professionals, who are discreet, brilliant around the house, with outstanding organisational
and administration skills and a willingness to go the extra mile when required. You will be
Required to keep accounts, deal with post, invoices and undertake any personal purchases
for the clients. Excellent spoken and written English essential and you must be comfortable around animals as possible care of two dogs. Must also like children, as there will be a lot of children around, but they will not be the re-possibility of the couple so at the most, very occasional babysitting may be required. There is a full time Head Gardener and a nanny when our clients are in residence.
Top negotiable salary. Holiday entitlement - 20 days per annum, to work Bank Holidays and take days off in lieu. MARCH START-- Hutchinson’s’ couple of 5 years service highly recommend this position. (REF HU1424)
